This is a group training and coaching program designed to develop healthier breathing habits, with weekly sessions for adults new to breathing training. It can be an ongoing group with registration via a monthly-membership subscription that can regularly accept new members, or a fixed-length group. Once someone signs up, they get immediate access to online training materials. We meet over Zoom, with access to the background materials on the Healthy Breathing Habits Academy portal.
At each session, participants will be guided to set a goal to experiment with a new, different way of breathing over the following week. Each week we will review how last week's goal went and what we learned; explore some new skills; and set goals for the following week. A huge benefit of the group is accountability as you develop and practice this intangible, invisible skillset into a valuable health-promoting tool.
As a beginning group we focus on breathing during sedentary activities and movement during light exercise. We concentrate on developing the ability to breathe healthfully during all the activities of daily living, including sitting, standing, sleeping, eating and talking, doing housework and walking around.
One beauty of this program is that everyone is encouraged to engage and improve from their own starting point, available time and desired intensity. Athletes and others who want more advanced training may start here for a month or so to get steeped in the basics before moving on to a more robust program that focuses on skillful breathing during moderate and vigorous exercise.
We cover the three fundamental principles of beginning breathing training on a rotating basis over and over again, allowing you to go deeper and deeper at your own pace, for as long as it's helpful. You can start and stop at any time.
Many modern people tend to hyperventilate -- with negative physical effects -- because of the stress in our environment and lives. The areas on which we will focus are:
-Breathing with your nose.
-Stopping breathing with your mouth.
-Breathing more gently overall as a habit.
You may think you're breathing this way already. Join us for as little as a month and investigate if that's true!
This group is not designed to address the immediate issues of anyone experiencing acute breathing distress. This group is a non-medical, non-psychological way to make headway toward a sustainable lifestyle change to embody healthy-breathing habits.
In these sessions we will focus on various aspects, including:
clearing and unblocking your nose when it's stuffed
dealing with challenging roadblocks that inevitably arise like colds, allergies and other illnesses
drills to increase your capacity and comfort to breathe with your nose longer
In these sessions we will take a deep dive on one aspect of countering mouth breathing, including:
Awareness of your resting mouth posture. Discover how often your mouth is open, and hear steps to take to keep it closed when appropriate (which is most of the time...)
Principles and practices of breathing while eating
Principles and practices of breathing while talking without getting winded!
Moving without grunting or panting
In these sessions we will focus on a pertinent topic, including:
Physical considerations: nose breathing vs. mouth breathing, breathing into your upper chest vs. the diaphragm, and posture.
Emotional considerations: Fear, stress, dysregulation, adverse child experiences and trauma history.
Principles and practices of breathing and sleeping
Principles and practices of breathing and movement
An online portal with training materials on all the breathing exercises and activities presented that is available to you 24/7 and includes articles, audio instructions and videos for the term of your membership.

Breathing Retraining Center offers individual and group training and coaching on self-management techniques to identify and correct poor-breathing habits. Breathing Retraining Center's educational products, courses and coaching are designed to improve breathing skills for people whose issues may be related to habits that have the potential to be improved, as a self-care/wellness activity. Breathing difficulty may be a warning sign of a life-treatening heart or lung condition, infection or other illness. Always check with your doctor about your own situation.
The Buteyko Breathing Technique and other breathing-retraining strategies we teach are an alternative approach and are not the practice of medicine, psychology or a form of psychotherapy, nor are they a substitute for seeking medical or psychological advice from an apporpriate professional health-care provider. We want to make the important distinction between using the Buteyko Breathing Technique and other breathing-retraining strategies for health and well-being and the practice of medicine, psychology or any other licensed health-care profession.
Breathing classes, coaching and other services from Breathing Retraining Center are offered by teachers who are not licensed by the State of California as physicians or other healing-arts practitioners unless so noted. We offer alternative non-medical/non-psychological techniques and our services are considered to be laternative or complementary to the healing arts that are licensed by the State of California.
